Heather Huffman-Dracht, ’00, has built a remarkable career and life defined by curiosity, compassion, and courage. After earning her medical degree at UCLA and completing a residency and fellowship in emergency and pediatric emergency medicine, she now serves as the medical director of a county jail in California—a role she finds both challenging and deeply rewarding. Heather shared how her Dartmouth experience instilled in her a lifelong love of learning, a trait that guides her as she cares for people of all ages and backgrounds. Her path hasn’t been without hardship—her oldest son underwent a heart transplant last year—but she approaches life’s challenges with resilience and perspective. A passionate traveler, Heather has taken her family across the globe, teaching her children that happiness comes not from wealth or status, but from community and connection. As a mother of three boys, she strives to raise them to respect women, value emotional openness, and redefine traditional gender roles. Reflecting on her journey, Heather offers her younger self—and others—a simple but powerful reminder: it gets better.
